SkyWay's Communications Coordinator/Youth Worker

Eliska has been a SkyWay trustee for over two years and is the owner of The Dictionary Hostel in Shoreditch.

1. How did you become involved in SkyWay?

SkyWay approached me as a local business to see if we at The Dictionary Hostel would be interested in buying products made by them. These included range of beautifully made planters and I was thrilled to support a charity at the same time. After some time a position opened on the board for a new trustee at which point I applied.

2. Tell us an interesting fact about you

I’ll tell you two!
I love clouds and belong to the cloud appreciation society.
Also, I’m Afrikaans, from French and Dutch origins, married to a Canadian hailing from Ireland, with two British daughters!

3. Which young person/people have inspired you?

Malala Yousafzai. She is an inspiration to me and my daughters. Her strength and her wisdom at such a young age is remarkable.

4. What is your earliest memory?

The sunshine of Africa streaming through our windows when I was little. Light has always affected me and influenced my mood.

5. What would you tell your younger self?

I don’t have regrets about my past ? Which is not to say I haven’t made many mistakes. However, I wouldn’t want my younger self to be any different than she was because it would mean I would not be the person I am today.

6. What’s the best thing about Hackney?

I find Hackney to be one of the most creative areas in London, probably because of the diversity of it’s inhabitants and the vast numbers of young people.

7.What meal would you share with a young person?

I’m such a fan of sushi and could eat it virtually every day of my life, although I don’t.

8. How would you like to be remembered?

How people may remember me is really not for me to say ? If the question is about how I want to have impact on the world, I can only say that doing your best each day, living with honesty and humility, being grateful and kind are important qualities to me.

9. What have you learnt from young people?

To be light.

Thanks Eliska!
